In response to Rev. David Bauscher and Mr.
Albion Guppy's criticism against the Aramaic English New Testament
and Andrew Gabriel Roth.
Shalom dear reader,
On February 28th, 2009, Rev. David Bauscher
posted charges against Andrew Gabriel Roth for "Gnostic heresy &
plagiarism".
Mr.
Bauscher writes:
"[..]Andrew's book expresses his heretical Gnostic views of who
Jesus is. On page 148 of his "translation", he has a note #19
that says:
'One
of the most powerful statements about YHWH and His Mashiyach in the
entire Aramaic NT. YHWH is the real Mashiyach, who chose the vessel
of Y'shua the man. However, within Y'shua the man is an occurrence
of the One Divine Nature of YHWH, also known as the Ruach
HaKodesh.'"
Those with first and second edition AENT Bibles
will recognize that Mr. Bauscher never included the entire footnote
that continues on to say;
"This is the literal meaning of the fullness of
YHWH dwelling inside Mashiyach, and in accordance with Tanakh
prophecy (Isaiah 53:1, Zechariah 12:10). The divine and human
natures exist separately yet side-by-side within Y'shua."
To clarify, some people believe that the flesh
of Y'shua was "God". Imagine sitting with Y'shua and his
disciples, leaning over to Y'shua and lightly pinching a bit of his
skin between your fingers. Many Christians believe that
Y'shua's flesh, before and after the resurrection, was "God".
They also believe that his nephesh (soul), was "God". The soul
is commonly understood by most to refer to our thoughts, our will
and our emotions. Some Christians don't believe Y'shua had or
was a "soul" that he only had a "divine spirit", however, haMishchah
(the anointing) is the Hebrew word behind Mashiyach (Messiah) which
is explained in the AENT.
Of course every Christian and Believer is
entitled to believe what they want and feel they need to believe,
regrettably some people condemn others who don't hold their same
Christology. Mr. Andrew Gabriel Roth has a very high
Christology that has been thoroughly misunderstood and
misrepresented by Rev. David Bauscher. The Semitic (or Jewish)
perspective is apparently far more complex than Rev. David Bauscher
is able to understand at this time (we do pray for a better ability
in his future). Yet, it is up to each follower of Y'shua
Mashiyach to read, study, pray, and ask the Ruach haKodesh (the Holy
Spirit) to reveal these spiritual matters. This is not
something one should try to force upon another soul, nor should we
ever think to condemn another human being who explains, to the best
of their ability, these deep and "hidden mysteries" of Mashiyach.
In addition to the footnote in the AENT that Mr.
Bauscher references above, the third edition AENT Bible includes,
"Please see YHWH is Y'shua Mashiyach, in Appendix" which
directs the reader to pages 1052-1055 on matters of Christology.
The AENT 3rd Edition also has Appendixes entitled "Alef Tav"
showing how in the Hebrew Torah YHWH speaks ("the Word") and then He
creates (became flesh). And how Mashiyach is the "bar"
(son) and "resh" (head or chief) in the very first verse of
the Bible (that's on page 709). An additional Appendix
entitled "Divinity Passages" (pages 772-779) surveys the
connection between Tanakh (Old Testament) quotations and equivalent
Brit Chadasha (New Testament) quotations that relate to Christology.
Rev. David Bauscher
wrote, "As
Andrew has stated it here, Jesus and Christ are two different
entities and persons; The Divine Christ (Meshiyach) lived within
Jesus (Yeshua) the man. Yeshua, according to Andrew, was a man in
whom God dwelt. But that could be said of any one of the Prophets or
Apostles."
Regrettably, the
statement; "Jesus and Christ
are two different entities and persons" indicates that
Mr. Bauscher has oversimplified and misrepresented
Mr. Roth's teaching and simply doesn't understand.
Then Mr. Bauscher goes on to level appalling,
vicious and untrue accusations against Mr. Roth stating that,
"He has taken credit for what others
have done, and thus robbed them of that credit. Even if Paul Younan
had given him permission to use his translation freely, Andrew no
where states that he relied on it to the extent he did rely on it;
indeed, he practically reproduced it with a 4% change in spelling!
He says in his introduction (page v) that he "compared" it to his.
That is simply deception. He says he "compared" (page v) Murdock's
to his. This is deceit! How could he have compared these
translations to his, when he had to copy 95% to 98% of them first to
produce his "translation"? What need was there to compare them
then?"
The full
statement in AENT (page v) Mr. Roth writes: "To retain as much
consistency as possible, Paul Younan’s translation has been compared
from Matthew 1 to Acts 15 and James Murdock’s translation for the
remainder, each word has been cross-checked with Aramaic. In
some cases, both sources are woven together into this translation,
under a unifying editorial vision and approach."
In
addition Mr. Roth writes on page vi;
"Footnotes not unique to this work are noted with the initials of
the source, i.e., PY for Paul Younan or JM for James Murdock, or by
recognizing the full name of the author."
In
addition Mr. Roth writes on page viii: "Acknowledgements We
extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have made contributions to
this publication: To Paul Younan for sharing his
acumen into the Aramaic language and ancient texts."
For those who haven't heard the history of how
the AENT came about, originally, Mr. Andrew Gabriel Roth never
intended to publish the AENT in the current printed book form it is
today. Mr. Roth sent me (his webmaster) a digital draft copy
of the NT to post on his website. I then encouraged Mr. Roth
to publish the AENT, his response to me was... "I'm not a
publisher... why don't you publish it?" From that time Mr.
Roth, and I, and numerous editors, Bible students and scholars
invested 3 years preparing the AENT to be published in 2008.
Mr. Roth, myself, and many of the Church of the
East and Peshitta community, have always been fully aware of, and,
together have made numerous public statements on the internet, radio
and recently on TV about Mr. Paul Younan's extensive and excellent
translation work that helped form the AENT. Of the 1700 or so
footnotes in the AENT, 107 have (PY) Paul Younan where Mr. Roth
features Mr. Younan's scholarship. Mr. Paul Younan's full name
is recorded 20 times in the AENT, for a total of 127 occurrences.
In an online statement Rev. David Bauscher
writes, "If Roth had credited Younan
and Murdock for their translations as his sources which he lightly
revised, he would be guiltless of the charge of plagiarism. As
it is, he is guilty. He never credited those men for his English
translation text, and theirs comprises 95% of the text, down to word
for word agreement and word order, even misspellings and grammar
errors are duplicated in places."
Rev. David Bauscher is horribly confused.
Mr. Roth chose to translate the English in the AENT as a literal as
possible Aramaic to English edition, what Rev. David Bauscher calls
"misspellings and grammar errors" are transliterations and Aramaic
syntax. Additionally, Mr. Paul Younan stated publicly that:
"...there really is very little of my work in
MARI....despite the fact that Andrew has stated multiple times that
the "I" stands for the Yudh of my last name. I am grateful and
flattered, but that was not necessary. Secondly, the very first
letter stands for Murdoch...as I understand it."
Mr. Paul Younan's statement is truthful,
originally the AENT was referred to as MARI which means "my master"
in Aramaic. Mr. Roth circulated his intention of using the
title MARI also as an acronym, without vowels M-R-Y in his mind
stood for Murdock-Roth-Younan. On page i
of every edition of the Aramaic English New Testament there is a
footnote regarding the subtitle Mari. Just before going to
press with the first edition Mr. Roth and I prayerfully decided on
using AENT, rather than MARI, as we felt it better represented this
publication. However, I feel that Mr. Paul Younan has very
much understated his contribution that made the AENT possible,
without Mr. Younan's scholarship and relationship with Mr. Roth I
doubt that the AENT would have come into existence the way it has.
Not so very long ago Rev. David Bauscher and Mr.
Albion Guppy sat at the feet of Mr. Paul Younan and Mr. Andrew
Gabriel Roth and were tutored in Aramaic, yet Rev. David Bauscher
has found it in his heart to accuse and lay blame against his peers.
I had conversations with Mr. Albion Guppy back when he thought
Andrew Gabriel Roth sat at the right hand of Mashiyach... oh how
things have changed. Why?
Shortly after Mr. Roth and I announced that we
planned to publish the AENT, Rev. David Bauscher announced that he
was planning to publish his own New Testament translation.
Rev. David Bauscher then launched a bitter religious rivalry against
Mr. Andrew Gabriel Roth and myself as the publisher.
Neither Mr. Roth or Mr. Younan have felt it
necessary to respond to the religious politics that Mr. Bauscher has
engaged in. As publisher of the AENT I'm making this brief
response to bear witness against Rev. David Bauscher's accusations
as simply malicious, false and self-serving.
On Thursday Apr 30, 2009, after hearing of Rev.
David Bauscher's accusations against Mr. Andrew Gabriel Roth, Mr.
Paul Younan posted a statement online saying:
Just to chime in
here, not only is the Interlinear here on
public domain, and not only is it NOT a
translation....but I have never, ever made
any English-only translation at all.
Whoever this Lawrence Sheets is, God bless
him, I have no idea. I have not seen,
read, authorized, collaborated with nor
reviewed anything Mr. Sheets has done.
For these individuals
to claim that somehow I've been plagiarized,
using my (!) English translation of all
things, seems to be a rather absurd idea to
me since I've never been involved in any
English translation whatsoever.
I'm flattered that
someone is looking out for my interests,
ahem, but even if I were to make an English
translation (and no, I never would)....it
would hold the same "Copyright" as all the
rest of my work does.....which is the same
Copyright that any other CoE scribe claimed
in the past 2,000 years.
Honest, the whole
concept is so foreign to me....copyrights,
intellectual property, etc. Could you
imagine scribes in the Dead Sea, Babylon,
the Vatican, or Mount Athos being told they
couldn't copy any work from another scribe?
What a joke! And what
a totally western concept.
Stephen King, I could
understand. But the scriptures?
Dave, what if the CoE
turned around and sued you for using "their"
scripture? Just whose is it, anyway....if it
does not belong to all of humanity?
Copyright on
scripture? Have you no shame whatsoever?
Have you lost the concept, the meaning of
Qurban~Korban...or however you'd like to
spell it?
What's wrong with you
people?
As Mr. Paul Younan has stated, "whoever this
Lawrence Sheets is, God bless him" because neither Mr. Younan,
Mr. Roth or I have ever heard of the fellow. We've only heard
of him being mentioned by Rev. David Bauscher, my online searches to
find this mystery person Mr. Lawrence Sheets and his work have
turned up empty. If this person exists I would much appreciate
dialogue and and a copy of his text that is being used to make
charges against Mr. Roth.
Many scholars have weighed in regarding the
AENT, including Dr. Russ Hills who posted this online:
"I wrote my doctoral dissertation containing a
defense of the Majority Text of the Greek New Testament. There is
very strong agreement of the Greek Majority Text with the Aramaic
Peshitta that is the basis for Andrew Roth's translation. After
considering the "Semiticisms" of the Greek text I have long believed
that the original documents had a Semitic source. Mr. Roth's
notes help to provide an accurate historical cultural context for
his translation. For these reasons, I consider the AENT the best
English representation of the New Testament that I have ever come in
contact with."

Sadly, Mr. Albion Guppy who claims to have
supplied "information" to Rev. David Bauscher, bore false witness by
saying that Mr. Roth had fabricated the person of Dr. Russ Hills, a
very well recognized and published educator. Shortly after the
bizarre and malicious statements were made by Rev. David Bauscher
and Mr. Albion Guppy, Dr. Russ Hills and others chose to discontinue
participating in dialogue with the aforementioned gentlemen.
On behalf of Netzari Press, I know of no
unfairness of work or scholarship between Mr. Andrew Gabriel Roth,
Mr. Paul Younan and myself who are brothers and sons within the One
Kehillath (congregation) of Elohim. I have worked along side
Mr. Andrew Gabriel Roth for over a decade and I know of several
other publishers and authors who have used Mr. Roth's translation
expertise prior to, and since publishing the AENT.
As the AENT continues to travel around the
world, Mr. Roth and I are now being privileged to invest in a TV
documentary about the Church of the East and the history and
preservation of the Sacred Aramaic New Testament text. Mr.
Andrew Gabriel Roth has often chorused that, "we stand on the
shoulders of giants", indeed we do, and we are seeking to do our
part so that the giants of the Aramaic speaking community shall
never be forgotten.
We are of the sentiment that the New Testament
belongs equally to all seekers of Truth. After having received
and reviewed the Aramaic English New Testament text of the 2nd and
3rd Editions by Andrew Gabriel Roth, in a letter full of love and
grace addressed to Netzari Press from; The Chancellor to the Bishop
of The Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, Diocese
Eastern USA, Chicago, Illinois, the Rev. C. H. Klutz writes on
behalf of His Holiness Mar Dinkha IV Catholicos Patriarch, and, The
Very Reverend George K. Toma, D.Min, and, The Chorebishop George
that; "the Aramaic is The Text of the Sacred Scriptures and that the
Greek was/is a translation of the Revelation of the worshipful and
merciful God." And that, "Our Lord is with us, Praise HIM
forever and ever: And, now unto HIM be all praise, glory,
honor, and adoration; forever and ever: Amen"
In conclusion, to any soul who has been mislead
or discouraged by Rev. David Bauscher's attacks against Mr. Andrew
Gabriel Roth, let us remember the words of our Master and Savior
Y'shua when he said, "But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless
them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for
them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;" and, "Father,
forgive them; for they know not what they do".
